So with so much attention and focus on genetically modified foods these days, it has become more and more important to clarify what’s true and what’s not.

Unfortunately, GMO topics are rampant with misinformation. One recent mantra I hear from many circles is that wheat and oats are genetically modified. Adding to this confusion, many manufacturers are more than willing to sell products with a “non-GMO” stamp on them that tells you less about what’s in the food and much more about what was NEVER in the food to begin with.

Ironically, stamping certain foods “GMO free” is like stamping a “fat-free” label on apples or a “cholesterol-free” label on a banana. In other words, it’s easy to label, because those foods COULD NOT contain fat or cholesterol even if they wanted to! Ah, the joys of  marketing.

So it is with oats. Buying “GMO free” oats is great if you want to spend extra money on meaningless labels, or if it coincides with a legitimate label like “organic” or “sustainable”. But don’t be fooled. There is no such thing as GMO oats.
